Over 98 Million People Reached on #40toNoneDay

This is wild.

Last year, we reached 17 million people online with our #40toNoneDay message. Our goal this year was 25 million.

The second annual #40toNoneDay reached an estimated 98.5 million people online. On April 27, 2016, thousands of users across the globe posted “unselfies” (selfies for a cause) and shared ideas and stories related to how we can together end lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth homelessness. In America, 40% of young people experiencing homelessness are LGBT, yet just 7% of the general youth population is LGBT. Only together can we get that number down from 40 to none.

#40toNoneDay 2016 was characterized by several things, including:

  • Cooperation among people of all sorts of professions and walks. Young people, government leaders, police officers, librarians, service providers, business owners, and many more all got involved. They say it takes a village. We’ve found that when community members take action to help prevent and end youth homelessness, young people are better able to get the support and services they need.
  • Support from some of our favorite artists (Sara Ramirez, Miley Cyrus, Jason Mraz, Judas Priest, and Wilco to name a few). We admire these people for not only their artistry, but also for using their influence for good.
  • New resources to help us better serve LGBT youth experiencing homelessness. This year’s #40toNoneDay arrived a day after the release of the most up-to-date and comprehensive resource ever on LGBT youth homelessness. Led by the True Colors Fund and National LGBTQ Task Force, “At the Intersections” highlights innovative approaches to supporting youth experiencing homelessness, provides case studies of replicable and successful models, and offers concrete solutions to ending homelessness among LGBTQ youth.
  • Official #40toNoneDay proclamations from cities and states across the country. New York City; Nashville; Pittsburgh, PA; The State of New Mexico; Fayatteville, AR; Cincinnati, OH; and Phoenix, AZ all declared April 27, 2016 as #40toNoneDay.
  • Cats, cats, and more cats.
