Support LGBTQ Youth This Holiday Season

posted in: News | 0

This has, without a doubt, been the True Colors Fund’s busiest year ever.

With the help of our supporters, we’ve made great progress in the effort to end homelessness among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth – but there’s still so much to do…

At this pivotal time in our nation’s history, we each have a personal responsibility to make sure LGBTQ youth are treated with dignity and respect.

In America, 1.6 million young people experience homelessness each year, and up to 40% of them are LGBTQ. Far too often, LGBTQ youth don’t get the support they need out of fear of discrimination. The True Colors Fund is working with communities, service providers, policymakers, and young people to change that.

I know you’re committed to solving this issue with us, so I had to share some incredible news with you. Weston Milliken, one of our most generous donors, has offered a matching gift challenge for the holidays. For all donations made up to $50,000, Weston will match your contribution. Are you up for it?

The True Colors Fund is working with communities across the country to ensure that young people have access to safe spaces where they can be their true selves. We do this through programs like the True Inclusion Assessment, an evaluation process that helps housing programs and service providers create safe and affirming environments for LGBTQ youth.

Every staff member a young person interacts with has the ability to impact their life for the better. That’s why individual training is so important to ending the experience of homelessness. Through our online True U Challenge, we trained over 800 staff members from homelessness service providers across Houston/Harris County, TX on LGBTQ inclusion. In 2018, we want to expand this Challenge across the country. It can mean the difference between a young person getting the support they need and staying out on their own.

To supplement these online trainings, we developed a new physical resource this year – the True Inclusion Toolbox. Each box is designed to equip service providers with the tools they need to offer safe and affirming care for LGBTQ young people – things like training materials, safe space signage, pronoun buttons, suggested policies and procedures, and more. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we were able to send 500 Toolboxes to providers across the country – free of charge!

All of this is possible because of you. With your help, we can do even more in 2018. Something I’m looking forward to is our upcoming State Index project – a comprehensive evaluation of all 50 states on how they’re addressing youth homelessness and what they can do to improve.

Together, we can create a world where all young people are safe, supported, and welcome – regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. This holiday season, I’m calling on you to join this effort, and remember: any gift you make by December 31, 2017 – no matter the amount – will be doubled.

The True Colors Fund will not give up until our vision becomes a reality, but we need your help. By making a gift today, you will improve the lives of LGBTQ youth across the country and in your own community. Thank you for standing with them and with the True Colors Fund.

All my best,

P.S. Don’t forget that all donations will be 100% matched this holiday season! Double your impact, and help make the world a better place for all young people.
