On October 3-4, 2017, leaders from across the world came together in Philadelphia, PA to share ideas and strategies for ending LGBTQ youth homelessness at the fourth annual 40 to None Summit. Coordinating and Collaborating to Prevent & End Criminalization of Homelessness

This session discusses the different forms of criminalization of homelessness and their connection to the justice system. We offer guidance around what states and localities can do to stop these harmful practices, minimize homeless students’ contact with the justice system, and engage legal advocates to address the needs of homeless youth.

Reaching Up: Supporting California’s Homeless Youth in Higher Education

This session presents on the resources that exist at California public higher education institutions to assist homeless undergraduate youth. We discuss new research, highlight the latest legislation, spotlight a local university’s approach, and honor voices of students with current and lived experiences of homelessness.

Human Centered Design and Collaboration: The Secrets to Sustainability

This session explores the power of human centered design in creating solutions to end homelessness among LGBTQ youth. Participants receive tangible processes, digital solutions, and methodologies that will equip them to better address LGBTQ youth homelessness nationwide.

Human Trafficking Among Homeless Youth: Implications for Policy and Practice

This session explores recent national research findings that draw upon the experiences of over 900 youth across 13 cities. Participants will learn about innovative practice models to identify and address the needs of trafficked youth.

Learn about the new LGBTQ Economic Justice Policy Agenda, created in collaboration with national and grassroots activists and advocates. This session discusses what low-income LGBTQ people and service providers from across the country are prioritizing in their economic justice advocacy.

Reaching for the STARS: Trans-Specific Housing

This multimedia presentation features video testimonies from program members and staff of STARS, a transgender-specific housing program for youth and young adults in NYC. The session explores the successes and challenges of setting up the program, including program evaluation data to demonstrate results.

Turning Lemons to Lemonade in a Low Resourced Community

Learn how Advocates for Richmond Youth is impacting LGBTQ+ youth experiencing homelessness in a low-resourced community. The team shares their pop-up drop-in center model and discuss how relationship-building can help tear down ageism in the work to end youth homelessness. Participants will consider ways that the gaps or challenges in their own communities can be turned into lemonade through a youth-oriented approach to problem solving.

Voices Heard: Creating Authentic Youth Partnerships

Too often, efforts to combat youth homelessness are stagnant because youth themselves are left out of the conversation. This workshop discusses key takeaways from the formation of the Homeless Youth Forum of LA, and highlight best practices in creating authentic partnerships with young people.

You CAN Implement Equity … But You Have to DO Stuff

This session shares concrete examples of how to implement racial equity approaches across efforts to end youth homelessness locally, regionally and nationally. Participants will explore how to use data and embrace failure to achieve racial equity.
