40 of the Forty: Rocky Ferguson

Feb 2015

Rocky is constantly trying to better himself. He dreams big, loves life and himself, and has a positive outlook that’s absolutely contagious. Being around him, you just can’t help but feel good about the future.

True Colors Fund: What do you think about when you wake up in the morning?

Rocky: The first thing I think about in the morning is getting out of my current situation. What ways can I better myself? And what I can do to make myself happy?

True Colors Fund: What’s your biggest dream?

Rocky: My biggest dream is to become an overall entertainment mogul. I want to be known around the world as an entertainer in every aspect. Except singing (laughs). I can’t sing, though I love music. I just want to be great. My main focus is film and production, but I want to dance, act, write, make music beats, write books… EVERYTHING!

True Colors Fund: What’s it like to be you?

Rocky: It’s frustrating in a sense, because so many people have so many high expectations of me. So many people think that I’m more than what I am and I just think I’m an average Joe trying to make it in this crazy world. On the flip side, I love that I give so many people inspiration to follow their dreams. People see all the projects that I’m involved in and find hope in themselves through me. So, all in all, I’d say being me is GREAT! I know that God has a better plan for me and this rut that I’m in won’t last for long. And I’m very happy that my drive and ambition can inspire people to follow their dreams.

True Colors Fund: Anything else you’d like to tell us?

Rocky: I’d like to tell LGBT youth that just because you are homeless, or may feel alone because you feel different or because someone told you can’t do something because of your sexual orientation, DON’T GIVE UP! God has a plan for every single one of us, and every day we wake up is another chance to be awesome! <- TWEET THIS!

We all have the power to better ourselves and the world around us. Believing that is the first step to making change. So how do you make each day awesome? Tell us on Facebook and Twitter!

The 40 of the Forty list gives lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning youth who have experiences with homelessness and/or housing instability a chance to speak for themselves. The young people on the list were nominated by homeless youth service providers, social workers, educators, individuals, and other folks across the country. Over the course of forty weeks, we’ll be releasing full length interviews with each young person featured on our list.
