May 17, 2004: Massachusetts becomes the first U.S. state to legalize marriage equality.
June 26, 2013: The Defense of Marriage Act is ruled unconstitutional, giving same-sex marriages federal recognition.
June 26, 2015: The Supreme Court makes marriage equality the law of the land.
It’s nearly impossible to put into words exactly what today means to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community, America, and the world. Today is massive. Today, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that all Americans have the right to marry. Justice Anthony M. Kennedy wrote the majority opinion in the 5 to 4 decision, saying:
“No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were.”
Our Executive Director Gregory Lewis had this to say:
“Today, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender young people are one step closer to living in a world in which they can be their true selves. When I started working in this movement 15 years ago, I never thought this day would happen this soon. To see, 15 years later, that marriage equality is the law of the land is an inspiring and empowering moment. Today, the LGBT community is a step closer to being equal citizens in America. There are so many people and organizations that have worked to make this happen. I am truly grateful and honored to have worked with many of them.”
Congratulations to all our friends who’ve worked so hard to make this victory happen!
