The Youth Homelessness Demonstration Program is a new initiative from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) created to reduce the number of youth experiencing homelessness in 10 participating communities.
Earlier this year, HUD released a Notice of Funding Availability, inviting communities to apply to become one of the communities selected to participate. We’re proud to announce that the National Youth Forum on Homelessness (NYFH), which we together facilitate with National Alliance to End Homelessness, is working with HUD to select up to ten communities, four of which will be rural communities. NYFH is a group comprised exclusively of young people to contribute to the growing national dialogue on how to make youth homelessness “rare, brief, and one-time.”
That’s right – young people are currently working with the federal government to help determine which communities will be selected to undertake this important work. Who better than to help guide selection than youth themselves? The process also serves as a professional development opportunity, as NYFH members are being trained on the selection and budgeting processes involved in such grants, paid for their work, and making valuable connections throughout the process.
Impressed by these young folks? We sure are! Help us spread the news on Facebook and Twitter!
